A Panel Discussion with Julian Burnside AO QC and Ken Petersen OCarm – facilitated by Peter Thomas

Proceeds towards Advocacy for Asylum Seekers

We are delighted to be joined by Julian Burnside QC, Australian barrister, human rights and refugee advocate, and author for this important discussion.

Julian Burnside is known for his staunch opposition to the mandatory detention of asylum seekers, and has provided legal counsel in a wide variety of high-profile cases.Julian was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2009, “for service as a human rights advocate, particularly for refugees and asylum seekers, to the arts as a patron and fundraiser, and to the law.”

 

 

Ken Peterson is a Carmelite with broad experience in leadership and ministry in a number of parishes. Currently Ken is a Director of the Sancta Sophia Meditation Community Warburton, working in the areas of spirituality and interfaith dialogue

 

Peter Thomas is a filmaker by profession. As a teacher of meditation, his eclectic knowledge is drawn from his study with the Dalai Lama in India, Thich Nhat Hanh in France and Christian monastic life in both Australia and overseas.

Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, an American, wrote widely on the consistent ethic of life that all Christians are called to uphold. 

 

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference have released a video exploring the Catholic stance on euthanasia in their God So Loved the World - Life Issues Series.

 

The Australian Catholics Bishops Conference have also released 'Real Care, Love  and Compassion: the alternative to euthanasia'.

Despite the many international calls for mercy, the Indonesian government executed eight people, including Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.  Below is a summary of the different Catholic perspectives that were expressed in the lead up to their deaths.

Pope Francis: Say a prayer for creation

Catholics have one more thing to pray about: the environment.

Every September 1, starting this year, will be an annual day of global prayer “for the Care of Creation,” Pope Francis said on Monday.

“I wish to inform you that I have decided to institute in the Catholic Church the ‘World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation’ which, beginning this year, is to be celebrated on 1 September,” Francis said in a letter released by the Vatican.
